It's official. Business people love their business credit and charge cards.

Two-thirds of small-business owners and solopreneurs have business cards, according to Capital One's Spark Business Barometer.

And business card holders charge double the transactions of consumer card holders, a Federal Reserve study shows. If used wisely, business cards can benefit you financially and as a convenience.

There are different kinds of business cards, each convenient in its own way - for example, the charge card and the credit card. Here are two that American Express offers:

The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN

One plus of the Business Gold Rewards is that as a charge card, there is no pre-set spending limit, so you have purchasing power that can adjust with your use of the card. It doesn't mean you have unlimited spending, but it does free you up to make big purchases almost instantly. You pay your balance in full each month, which can be an advantage if you need an incentive to not pay interest.

Here's how it works:

Earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points, up from 25,000, after you spend $5,000 within the first three months of card membership. That means you can get up to $500 in travel, merchandise, and entertainment.

Then, out of five categories, you pick a category where you want to earn 3X points for every dollar spent. You get to earn 2X points on the other four categories. Here they are:

  • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • US purchases for advertising in select media
  • US purchases at gas stations
  • US purchases for shipping
  • US computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers

The 3X and 2X points apply to the first $100,000 in purchases in each of the five categories per year. Everything after that is 1X point.

The $175 annual fee is waived the first year. The fee for the first employee card is waived the first year, then it's $50. There is no fee for all other employee cards.

Blue for Business Credit Card from American Express

If you would prefer a credit card because you want the freedom to carry over your balance from time to time, Blue for Business has features that may be worth your while. Add to that, the Blue for Business has no annual fee.

First off, until February 1, 2017, you can earn 10X points at US restaurants for the first six months, on up to $2,000 in purchases. You can also earn 2X points on qualifying purchases the first year, with a cap of $50,000.

You also get 10,000 Membership Rewards points after your first purchase within your first 3 months of card membership. Finally, you can get a 30% annual points bonus based on the previous year's purchases. For example, if you spend $50,000 in the first year, you would get a bonus of 15,000 points.

Whether you choose a charge card or a credit card, each has its benefits. It just depends on how you plan to spend and pay.
