You can still book Mahindra’s SUV despite the diesel ban. Here’s how

Invention is the mother of necessity and Mahindra & Mahindra has proved it. Affected by the Supreme Court’s ban on heavy diesel engines, the automaker has developed a 1.9-litre engine for its SUV.

M&M has developed another version of mHawk engine to power Scorpio and XUV 500, bringing the limit within the norms.

This has also been approved by the Automotive Research Association of India.

Automakers are taking no chances and are preparing for themselves, in case the ban gets extended.

M&M’s executive told ET, “Despite downsizing the power, the torque is expected to be maintained at the level offered with the 2.2-litre engine.”

Industry experts say M&M has developed the engine quite fast as it is a time consuming job.

M&M executive director Pawan Goenka had, earlier, dropped hints that they would redesign the engine after the temporary diesel ban was implemented.

“We are certainly prepared for all eventualities. We are coming up with a petrol line-up, which will be made available over a period of time. This will be our defence over something like this," Goenka had said.
