Lok Sabha Election 2019: Polling dates for Sikkim

India’s Election Commission announced dates for the country’s 17th Lok Sabha elections on March 10. Polling will be in seven phases starting, April 11. The votes will be counted on May 23 and will decide the fate of major political parties in India.

Sikkim constituency is the only Lok Sabha constituency in the state of Sikkim in northeastern India.

In 2014 general elections, Prem Das Rai of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) defeated Tek Nath Dhakal from Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) by a majority. The total turnout of voters were 3,08,967 as per reports.

Sikkim took part in the first general elections in 1977. The first member of parliament from the state was was Chatra Bahadur Chhetri of the Indian National Congress (INC). Interestingly, he was elected unopposed.

Currently, Pawan Kumar Chamling of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) is the chief minister of the state and has retained his office since 1994 - a rare feat to achieve by an Indian politician.
