  • LG's 2019 OLED TVs will get an update in the "following weeks" that will give them support for Nvidia's G-Sync gaming technology.
  • G-Sync allows Nvidia's graphics cards and compatible screens to play games at the same refresh rate, which prevents jarring artifacts on screens, like screen tearing.
  • LG's TVs already feature variable refresh rate for gaming (VRR), and the update will simply make LG's 2019 OLED TVs with VRR compatible with Nvidia's 20-series RTX graphics cards.

LG announced on Tuesday that it's adding Nvidia's G-Sync gaming technology to its 2019 OLED TV lineup with a firmware update rolling out in the "following weeks," which will help PC games play smoothly on the TVs.

The update will enable a feature called "variable refresh rate" (VRR) on LG's 2019 OLED TVs when they're hooked up to a gaming PC with an Nvidia 20-series RTX graphics card.

VRR allows a screen, like a TV, to vary its refresh rate to match the refresh rate of a game that's being rendered on a console or gaming PC. Without VRR, a game console or gaming PC can render games at a higher or lower refresh rate than the screen, which can result in screen tearing.

Screen tearing looks like this:

LG's 2019 OLED TVs could already support VRR for the Xbox One X. The firmware update will add VRR support for Nvidia's 20-series RTX graphics cards. LG did not mention whether older Nvidia graphics cards would be supported.

LG's 2019 OLED TV lineup supports up to 120Hz refresh rate at 1440p, and up to 60Hz refresh rate for 4K.

The update isn't to say that Nvidia is adding G-Sync hardware to LG's 2019 OLED TVs, which has historically been the case for monitors to feature Nvidia's G-Sync technology. Rather, it's that LG's 2019 OLED TVs and their VRR feature already meet the requirements for G-Sync. The update will simply allow greater compatibility with LG's 2019 OLED TVs and Nvidia's 20-series RTX graphics cards.

LG's 2019 OLED TVs join the recent and growing collection of large-format gaming displays, like Nvidia's own 65-inch big format gaming display, and Alienware's 55-inch OLED gaming display.

TVs don't typically come with VRR for PC games, which has made TVs a less appealing option for PC gamers, at least compared to monitors that support VRR. These large gaming displays narrow the compromise gap between TVs and gaming monitors, allowing the PC gaming in the living room a more viable option.
