LeBron James, king of the NBA, plays 'Destiny'

Jun 22, 2016, 02:45 IST

LeBron James is on top of the world right now. He made basketball history in a big way this week: He delivered the first NBA title to Cleveland, a city that hasn't won a major sports championship in 64 years, and he did it by beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors in a Game 7 after overcoming a 3-1 game deficit - something no NBA team has ever done.

To achieve this incredible comeback, LeBron James admitted to watching several movies, including comedies like "Revenge of the Nerds" and all the "Ocean's 11" movies, but he also spent some time playing video games during his travels.

And, according to Sports Illustrated, LeBron's game of choice during the Finals was "Destiny," the popular first-person shooter from the makers of "Halo."

Bungie, the studio that makes "Destiny," had this to say on Twitter:

Now, there's still much we don't know about LeBron's relationship to "Destiny." Did this game help him mentally prepare for the Finals? In other words, was "Destiny" in any way responsible for helping Cleveland win its first NBA championship? I'm guessing the answers to these questions is a yes, absolutely yes, but we've yet to verify with The King himself.

On a personal note, I'm pretty familiar with "Destiny." Okay, it's a mild obsession. I've spent over 900 hours playing the game since September 2014.

That said, I'm pretty sure there's a direct correlation between playing "Destiny" and success. Just look at me and LeBron. I'm an editor for this cool technology website called Tech Insider, and LeBron just won the NBA Finals. Is it a coincidence we both play "Destiny"? Absolutely not. One might say it was destiny.

And so, on that note, I'd like to conclude this post by talking to LeBron directly (if you are not LeBron, you can stop reading now):

Hey man. Congrats on the NBA Finals win, I knew you could do it. On an unrelated note, I heard you play "Destiny." What system do you play on? I'm on PS4. What's your favorite gun in the game? What class do you main? I'm guessing you like playing as a titan (probably a striker or sunbreaker, I imagine) but with your shooting streak in the last three games of the Finals I wouldn't be surprised if you preferred being a gunslinger. Anyway, if you are on PS4, we should play together sometime - my gamertag is "redletterdave." I'd be down for a strike or a raid if you were up for it, or just good old Crucible if that's your thing. Hope to hear from you. Also, I like your Kermit hat.
