Leaked schematics reportedly reveal what the iPhone 6S will look like

Jul 6, 2015, 19:06 IST

Apple's next iPhone probably won't be released until September, but we may already have some idea of what it will look like. Schematics published by Engadget Japan show that the iPhone 6S will reportedly be slightly thicker than the iPhone 6, giving it a design that's barely different than that of Apple's current iPhone.

Specifically, the iPhone 6S is expected to be 7.1mm thick, which is a bit larger than the 6.9mm iPhone 6, according to Engadget Japan. This provides further evidence that the iPhone 6S will likely be an incremental update to the 6 rather than a major change.

Take a look at the image below, which Engadget Japan claims to have obtained from a reliable source in China.

At the same time, 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman also reports that the next iPhone will be slightly chunkier than the iPhone 6, but not to the point that it's actually noticeable. In fact, Gurman writes that the change may be so slight that Apple might not even note the change in thickness when it updates its technical specifications for the iPhone in the fall.

If the change is as subtle as Gurman and Engadget Japan suggest it is, most of the cases and accessories made for the iPhone 6 will probably fit the iPhone 6S as well. You'll notice that the image above suggests Apple's next iPhone will come with the same ports and speaker grills as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

The sketches from Engadget Japan are one of several leaks that have given us an idea of what Apple's next iPhone will look like. Last week, Gurman posted a set of images that show the iPhone 6S' back cover and internal components, too.

Other than a slightly thicker design, the iPhone 6S is expected to come with Apple's Force Touch technology built into its screen, an improved camera, and the same storage options as Apple's current iPhone lineup. We expect to learn more in September, which is when Apple usually unveils its new iPhones.
