Leaked documents suggest Apple will launch a premium iPhone codenamed 'Ferrari' next year

AppleInsider

A Chinese social media user has published what they claim are leaked manufacturing documents from Apple which appear to confirm rumours that the company will launch three iPhones in 2017 - "s" models of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and a redesigned, top-tier model internally codenamed "Ferrari," Apple Insider reports.

The blogger, who posted the document on one of China's biggest social media platforms Sina Weibo (it was first noticed by Chinese technology site cnBeta), is known for leaking information from Apple's East Asian supply chain.

And the documents appear to confirm a list of rumours about features the "Ferrari" - perhaps a codename for the iPhone 8 or the iPhone 10 - will have.

The rumoured features include an "AMOLED" panel - a new kind of OLED (organic light-emitting diode display) screen already used by Samsung - which would allow the phone to have a borderless, all-display front surface. Another rumour is that the OLED screen would be mounted on plastic, suggesting that it might be curved. This lines up with a report from The Wall Street Journal which says Apple is testing prototypes for new iPhones which may have a new design centered on a curved screen.

Other rumoured features the document mentions include a glass-sandwich design (glass at the front and back of the phone), an "invisible" home button, and wireless charging.

The "Ferrari" iPhone, which could be released to mark the iPhone's 10th anniversary, will come with "a substantial internal redesign," the leaked documents claim. The document also says that Apple is considering relocating the SIM card tray towards the bottom of the handset to make room for internal components.

The iPhone 7s and 7s Plus, internally codenamed D20 and d21, are expected to have LCD displays like previous iPhones, the documents reveal.

All of this is in line with speculation from KGI Securities, which pointed to three iPhone models in 2017, with only one sporting the new kind of OLED screen.
