However, it all started with him borrowing just $1,500 from his father to set up a bicycle parts business in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Enter Sunil Bharti Mittal, one of Asia’s most prominent self-made billionaires. He was one of the first Indian entrepreneurs to identify the mobile telecom business as a major growth area.

He launched telecom services in Delhi way back in 1995. That’s when Bharti Cellular Limited (BCL) was formed under the brand name AirTel. Within a few years, Mittal’s company became the first telecom company to cross the 2-million mobile subscribers mark. The rest is history.
