Alicia Vikander is starring in the 'Tomb Raider' reboot - here's why she'll make a great action star
The blockbuster world could use more Oscar winners. Video game adaptations have struggled for years to find their voice in Hollywood, and Vikander gives the "Tomb Raider" reboot a boost just by being in it.
She's already proven her blockbuster prowess. Vikander killed it in last year's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." The action caper itself got mixed reviews, but she got lots of great notes.
She stands out in a male-dominated field. Hollywood blockbusters are notoriously male-heavy. In last year's outstanding "Ex Machina," Vikander went toe-to-toe with her two male co-stars, and gave an unforgettably unsettling performance.
Most actors leave all the work to their stunt doubles, but Vikander can make action scenes convincing on her own. She did some of her own stunts in the upcoming "Jason Bourne."

She's a dancer, a skill which actually comes in handy for action roles. Vikander trained as a ballet dancer at the Royal Swedish Academy. She eventually transitioned into acting, but action skills and dance skills can go hand-in-hand.
She truly understands the franchises she signs onto. Vikander has admitted to being something of a gamer, and she has an affinity for Lara Croft. "She was such an icon, I played the game when I was a kid, but they rebooted the game a few years ago so it is now becoming more of an origin story," she said in an interview with ITV.
She can play any role. Nobody can quite define the 27-year-old actress yet. Is she an action star or an indie darling? Vikander is early enough in her career that she hasn't been pinned to a certain genre yet. This is her chance to define herself as an action star. And if she doesn't want to do that, she has the acting chops to elevate something like "Tomb Raider."
