Terrorists opened fire in the busy weekly market at Balajan Tinali market in Kokrajhar, Assam, leaving 14 civilians dead and 15 injured. So far, security forces have been able to kill one of the terrorists, recovering an AK-47.
Awaiting support from additional forces, security forces are still battling these terrorists in intense firing sessions.
Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay told reporters that the attack was carried out by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit).
Even though Assam has been under the ravage of militants for a long time, this broad daylight attack is the first of its kind.
"We suspect there were at least three militants and one of them has been killed. Army is searching the area for the other militants," said Defence PRO Lt Col S Newton.
