The keto diet has turned into a revolution of sorts, as people with and without fitness goals embracing it. Afterall, it is the fastest way to lose fat. Yet, few are aware of the effects and side-effects of keto diet.

Ketogenic diet is a low carb, high-fat diet, which turns the body into a fat-burning machine. When a human body is provided only with fat, it undergoes a state of ketosis where insulin levels fall causing extensive fat burn.

But here are five things to remember before going on this diet.

Keto diet helps you lose weight, but not fat


Ketone supplements can be effective for reducing body weight than low-carbohydrate and high-fat ketogenic diets, according to a study. However, the weight loss is triggered by water loss in the body instead of fat loss.

Keto diet alters the way insulin functions in the body, which increases the risk of developing diabetes.

"Diabetes is one of the biggest health issues we face. Although ketogenic diets are known to be healthy, our findings indicate that there may be an increased risk of insulin resistance with this type of diet that may lead to Type-2 diabetes,” said Christian Wolfrum, Associate Professor at the ETH Zurich in Switzerland.


Can lead to vital micro-nutrient deficiencies


Eating only fat means the loss of fruits and vegetables from the diet. However, they are essential for the body as they are a major source of vital vitamins and minerals. It could lead to micro-nutrient deficiencies.

Keto diet can lead to Keto flu, which could last a week. It can also cause weakness or fatigue, nausea, headache, diarrhea or constipation, muscle cramps, bad breath, skin rashes, and mood swings.

It could also increase the chance of kidney stones or cause similar problems, according to a Harvard study.

Low-carb diet may protect eyesight


But not all is wrong with keto diet. Apart from helping people lose weight, keto diet can help glaucoma patients maintain vision. This has become evident in a study conducted on mice.

Glaucoma is an eye disease which causes vision loss and also cause blindness.

The findings led by Denise Inman from the Northeast Ohio Medical University in the US showed that low-carb, high -fat diet protects retina cells and their connections to the brain from degeneration.
