Jon Stewart Slams NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre For Hypocrisy On Gun Control
Stewart was flabbergasted by Trotter's testimony, in which she suggested that a woman needs an assault weapon to potentially defend herself and her children from an intruder. She told the story of a woman who had done so. But when Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse questioned her and asked whether the woman's weapon of choice was actually a shotgun (not an assault weapon), Trotter said she couldn't remember.
"You don't remember?!" Stewart said. "You told a James Joyce-ian story about the lady and the marauders. I could smell what she was making for dinner in that story! And you don't remember the gun — i.e., the only detail relevant to this hearing?"
Stewart, though, saved his harshest criticism for LaPierre when he pointed out a flip-flop. In the hearing on Wednesday, LaPierre said the organization opposed background checks because only criminals would follow them.
But Stewart showed a clip of the same LaPierre appearing before Congress in 1999 — and advocating for the use of background checks.
"Wow. Background checks used to be supported by 100 percent of Wayne's la pierre," Stewart said.
