The luxury fashion brand Jimmy Choo is under fire for an ad depicting men cat-calling a woman on the streets of New York City.
The ad, which was released in November, features model Cara Delevingne walking down a city street wearing a revealing dress and Jimmy Choo boots. As she walks, men whistle at her and make comments on her shoes.
Describing the ad on on its Facbeook page, the brand writes, "Starring in the Jimmy Choo Cruise 2018 campaign, Cara Delevingne takes us out on a night in New York City. From the pre-prep to the early hours, it's a whirlwind of disco, sparkles and great shoes. Click play to come along for the ride."
Some people are questioning the appropriateness of the ad, given the national spotlight on sexual harassment stemming from the bombshell allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. People branded the ad as "sexist," "clueless," and "tone-deaf" on social media.
"Perhaps now is not the best moment to run an ad about how cool and sexy catcalling is?" Jessica Valenti wrote on Twitter in response to the ad.
Another Twitter user wrote, "can someone please tell the fashion industry that we have jobs and money now? They seem to keep selling exclusively to the men in our lives with these campaigns. Someone should let them know."
Jimmy Choo did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
