Now that Jeff Bezos space flight company, Blue Origin, has had some successful test flights (after a first one didn't go so well in 2015), he's talking openly and excitedly about the company.
On Saturday, Blue Origin successfully launched another test flight. This is the same vehicle, it's third flight.
And Bezos live-tweeted the whole event, beginning on Friday, when he announced the planned flight.
These are unmanned flights. But Bezos hopes to start testing manned flights next year with the goal of taking to passengers into space in 2018 if all goes well with these tests. He showed off the crew capsule. The door of the capsule features a bunch of tortoises. They represent successful missions. This flight was dangerous, he said. The plan was to restart the vehicle's BE-3 engine only 3,600 feet above the ground as it returned. If the engine didn't start right on time, it would crash 6 seconds later. Fortunately the test flight went off flawlessly, Bezos reported. They put drone cameras in the air to document it all, Bezos said, and he promised to share more footage of the flight from the drones soon. The billionaire cofounder of shopping behemouth Amazon also credited his new pair of Gradatim Ferociter boots, worn to the launch, as his good luck charm for the day's success. If things keep going this well for Blue Origin, space flight for regular people will be coming our way in just a few short years.Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through hispersonal investment company Bezos Expeditions.
