JCPenney Just Killed Free In-Store Wi-Fi To Save Money
Megan Durisin/Business InsiderJCPenney has eliminated free Wi-Fi in its stores to save money.
The retailer will save $7 million by not offering Wi-Fi at its 1,100 stores, reports Sapna Maheshwari at Buzzfeed.
Failed JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson spent $12 million installing the service last year, according to Maheshwari.
Johnson advocated for the Wi-Fi because he wanted to enable mobile check-out in stores and thought customers would say longer if they had internet.
But current interim CEO Mike Ullman said the brand's core customers found mobile check-out confusing.
The struggling retailer's sales are down 12% this year.
