LucasfilmWho is Rey? The answer may not be as clear cut as we thought.

"Star Wars: Episode IX" director Colin Trevorrow has seen your Rey theories.

After rabid online debates about who the lead female protagonist of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" could be, the "Jurassic World" director is shedding some light on one of the film's biggest questions. Is Rey a Skywalker? A Solo? A Kenobi?

His answer may have you thinking she's none of the above.

"We're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying," Trevorrow told Entertainment Tonight. "Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We'll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we're just telling you what happened."

While Trevorrow wouldn't confirm or deny any specific theory, he said it's important that the mystery behind Rey's identity fit not just into "Episode IX" or the sequel trilogy that "The Force Awakens" kicked off, but the "Star Wars" saga as a whole.

"By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies," he explained. "It's something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years… Star Wars is a belief system, it's not just a story and it's not just a movie, and it's something I take very seriously."

Trevorrow says he wants to capture a specific feeling for the audience when Rey's Jedi connection is explained. "Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of 'The Force Awakens,' but in the entire galaxy," he said. "She deserves it. We'll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we're just telling you what happened."

Trevorrow's response seems to tease an "Episode IX" reveal for Rey's history instead of Episode "VIII." But since he wants fans to feel like the answer is connected with all of the "Star Wars" films, could that mean there are already hints about Rey's identity in "The Force Awakens" or earlier films?

We'll see when "Star Wars" hits in 2019.
