Who is Mike Waltz, and how is he connected to India?
International2 min read
Mike Waltz, the Congressman from Florida and a retired Green Beret, has been selected by Donald Trump as the new National Security Adviser (NSA). This appointment, which doesn’t require Senate confirmation, highlights Waltz’s significant role in shaping US national security policy with a strong focus on China and the Indo-Pacific.

As a seasoned member of the US House of Representatives, Waltz brings a unique military background and experience, serving on the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence Committees. Known for his advocacy for a stronger US military, especially in countering threats from China, Waltz has consistently called for a larger defence budget and comprehensive military readiness.

What is the India Caucus?

The India Caucus, co-chaired by Waltz and Ro Khanna, is the largest country-specific caucus in the US Congress and focuses on fostering a robust US-India relationship. Founded in 1993, the caucus works across party lines to strengthen economic, security, and cultural ties between the two nations. Waltz, a strong advocate for India, sees India as a crucial partner, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where both countries face mutual security concerns regarding China’s growing influence.
The caucus advocates policies to support trade and defence cooperation, including initiatives like arms trade agreements and cooperative cybersecurity measures. Its bipartisan nature enables both Republicans and Democrats to collaboratively support policies favouring closer Indo-US ties. The group also influences US foreign policy decisions that impact the South Asian region, where India is a key player.

Waltz’s stance on India and China

Waltz’s appointment as NSA is expected to intensify the US stance on China. He views China as a primary threat, citing concerns over issues like Taiwan, the South China Sea, and China’s actions along its Himalayan border with India. Waltz has strongly advocated for closer US-India defence collaboration, which includes supporting bills that enable India to acquire advanced military technology more easily.

Waltz has been vocal about ensuring that America’s focus is on countering the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), even suggesting that the US military is currently unprepared to adequately address potential conflicts in the Indo-Pacific. He supports reallocating resources to strengthen military alliances in Asia, which includes bolstering India’s defence capabilities as a counterbalance to China.

Why Waltz’s appointment matters for India

As a known proponent of India’s importance in US strategic planning, Waltz’s role as NSA holds promise for stronger diplomatic and defence relations between the two countries. Given that both nations are democracies facing tensions with China, Waltz’s influence could lead to increased military exchanges, intelligence sharing, and joint strategic exercises between US and Indian forces.
Expect Waltz to foster deeper collaboration between the US and India, especially in military and technological domains. His leadership in the India Caucus, combined with his NSA role, sets the stage for an era of enhanced strategic partnership between the two nations. This is likely to manifest in areas such as military training, cybersecurity, and defence technology transfers, benefitting both nations in their shared goal of maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region
