An elderly man whose car appeared to be run over by a Russian armored vehicle in a viral video was rescued from the wreckage.

A video circulating on social media appeared to show a Russian armored vehicle swerving and then running over a civilian car in the Obolon district in Ukraine's capital Kyiv.

The 25-second clip, filmed from a window, shows a black car being run over and crushed by a tank as the people filming the video scream and cry in horror.

A separate video appears to show a group of men attempting to free the elderly driver trapped in the crushed vehicle.

Rescuers used an ax and crowbar to remove the car door to free the man.

The car's roof was ripped off, and its hood and windows were demolished.

In the video, the elderly driver appeared to be shaken up but not visibly injured, although the extent of his injuries is unclear.

Eyewitness Viktor Berbash told AFP that he watched the incident unfold from his balcony and that he believed the move was intentional.

"Two armoured vehicles were driving along the road, and the second of them deliberately drove into the oncoming lane," Berbash told the outlet.

"It was not by chance. It was for fun. There was no need for this. And it just ran into this car. Stopped, reversed over it again and drove on."

Since Russian forces began their assault on Ukraine on Thursday, missiles have rained down across the country, and Russian tanks have entered major cities, including the outskirts of the capital Kyiv.
