Videos show the chaotic aftermath of the former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan being shot at a political rally on Thursday.

A video posted to the Twitter account of his PTI party showed the former prime minister waving at the crowd moments after he was shot, not appearing seriously hurt.

Khan can be seen emerging to rapturous chanting from his supporters. He seemed to be physically supported by aides.

"Imran Khan was shot in the leg but was stable while being taken to hospital. He [waved] at supporters too," the tweet said.

Reuters cited local media reports that Khan was shot in the foot, and was "out of danger."

Other videos appeared to show a gunman being intercepted by members of the crowd.

One video appeared to show the gun being wrestled away from a man by a bystander. It was posted online by Pakistani media outlet Naya Pakistan.

Another video posted on social media appears to show the same incident from a different angle.

The same man can be seen being carried like a hero by Khan's supporters in another video aired by Pakistani outlet ARY News.

Fawad Chaudhry, a spokesperson for the PTI, told Reuters that crowd members had held back the gunman.

"If the shooter had not been stopped by people there, the entire PTI leadership would have been wiped out," Chaudhry said.

Chaudry added that he believed it was a "clear assassination attempt" on Khan, who was removed from power in April after losing a no-confidence vote.

Khan was shot in Wazirabad, where he was leading a protest march to Islamabad as part of efforts to call new elections in the country.
