There has been no clarification as to what actions prefaced the shooting or who shot "Tiny" Toese, who stands six feet three inches tall and weighs more than 300 pounds, according to the Portland Tribune.

Journalist Alissa Azar, who was at the September 4 protest, stated on Twitter that she was chased by a group of Proud Boys.

Toese has been charged several times for violence at Proud Boys events, with The Independent reporting that he was arrested in 2018 for a misdemeanor assault conviction. He attacked an anti-fascist activist, leaving them with stitches and a concussion.
