US and South Korea will wargame a nuclear crisis just days after North Korea issued its latest threat

  • The exercise will come just days after North Korea's government issues its latest threats.

The US and South Korea will simulate a nuclear crisis in a tabletop exercise next week, just days after North Korea's latest threat of "unprecedentedly" strong actions against the countries.

According to The Korea Herald, South Korean officials said the one-day tabletop exercise was designed "to develop a joint strategy and response to North Korea's potential use of nuclear weapons."

The Pentagon-based exercise will involve possible scenarios where North Korea has used nuclear weapons, prompting personnel to react, manage, and resolve situations.

On Friday, the North Korean Foreign Ministry had threatened to take "unprecedentedly persistent and strong counteractions" against the US and South Korea, the Associated Press reported.

According to the AP, the Ministry accused the countries of planning a variety of military drills — including their largest field exercises ever.

North Korea warned that the US and South Korea's activities could plunge the Korean Peninsula into a "grave vortex of escalating tension," per AP.
