Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to return to Washington, DC, for the first time since he left office, with indications he plans to speak at a GOP summit and outline what a second presidential term for him might look like.
He's set to deliver remarks on July 26, the second day of the America First Agenda Summit, alongside other Republican and MAGA figures such as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Sen. Lindsey Graham, Axios first reported Thursday.
The website for the America First Policy Institute, which is running the event, confirmed Trump's appearance on Thursday. Since he departed the White House in January 2021, Trump has been living at his Mar-A-Lago resort in Florida, and he has traveled across the US to speak at MAGA events.
Trump's speech could come days after the next hearing organized by the committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack; that hearing is expected to take place in prime time next Thursday.
A source familiar with the event's planning told CNN that Trump was expected to use the podium to respond to any allegations and revelations from that hearing.
The same source said Trump was expected to speak on policy plans he might pursue if he runs for and wins a second term as president in 2024, per CNN.
In a New York magazine interview published Thursday, Trump suggested he'd already made a decision to run in 2024 and was only mulling when to announce his bid.
Much could hinge on whether Trump declares a 2024 run before the November midterms.
An early announcement may undermine the GOP's chances at winning back congressional seats if midterm campaigns begin fixating on Trump and his reputation, Insider's Ryan Barber and Kimberly Leonard previously reported.
According to The Washington Post, Trump has been considering a September announcement, with one source telling the outlet there's a "70-30 chance" he'd make his bid official before the midterms.
