- The Met Police arrested an unidentified Tory MP for the alleged sexual offenses, The Sun reported.
A Conservative UK politician is under investigation and has been asked to stay away from Parliament amid reports that a lawmaker was arrested and accused of rape and sexual assault, officials said.
The Guardian and The Sun reported on Tuesday that the Metropolitan Police arrested a Tory MP who is accused of rape. The MP's identity was not made public.
Metropolitan Police declined to confirm that the person who was arrested was an MP to Insider.
"A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust, and misconduct in public office," the Metropolitan Police told Insider when asked about the reported arrest.
The man, who police did not identify, remains in custody.
Met Police said it first received a report accusing the man of sexual offenses in January 2020. Police said the report stems from accusations of incidents between 2002 and 2009 in London.
A spokesperson for Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris told Insider that the chief whip "has asked that the MP concerned does not attend the Parliamentary Estate while an investigation is ongoing.
"Until the conclusion of the investigation we will not be commenting further," the spokesperson said.
The UK's PA Media also reported the news in a tweet: "A Conservative MP has been asked to stay away from Parliament amid an investigation, the Tory whips office said, after it was reported an unnamed MP has been arrested on suspicion of rape."
