What happened today:

The "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan." The Taliban declared the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan," marking a nail in the coffin of the US-backed Afghan government. The group used the name for the country when it ruled it between 1996 and 2001, before it was taken from power by US-led forces - though only a few countries recognized that regime.

GOP rep. violates transparency law. Rep. Diana Harshbarger, a Republican from Tennessee, failed to properly disclose more than 700 stock trades that together are worth at least $728,000 and as much as $10.9 million, according to an Insider analysis. The tardy trades could invite an ethics investigation and fine.
