Chauvin gets 22.5 years. Derek Chauvin, 45, was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd. He was found guilty in April of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter. It's a lengthy sentence, as first-time offenders in Minnesota, like Chauvin, usually face a sentence of 12.5 years for second-degree murder.
Biden puts his foot down. The Department of Justice is suing Georgia over a major election law passed this spring. SB 202 made changes to nearly every aspect of Georgia's elections and the DOJ alleges it discriminates against Black voters. It's the department's first major voting rights enforcement action of the Biden administration.
First collapse victim identified. The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's office identified 54-year-old Stacie Fang as one of the victims who died in the partial condo collapse in Surfside, Florida. Officials said at least four people have been confirmed dead from the collapse. No other identities have been released.
Pence breaks from Trump. Former VP Mike Pence said Thursday he was "proud" to do his Constitutional duty and certify the election. "There is almost no idea more un-American than the idea that one person could choose the president," Pence said. Former President Trump continues to express discontent with Pence over the certification.
Spears' parents react. Britney Spears' parents, Jamie and Lynne, have each spoken out after the pop superstar delivered an explosive testimony at her conservatorship hearing on Wednesday. Spears' mother, Lynne, says she's "very concerned" for her. Jamie, Spears' father and coconservator, said through his lawyer that he "misses" his daughter.
That's all for now. See you Monday.
