What happened today:

Tragedy in Kabul. At least 12 US service members were killed and 15 more were wounded in explosive blasts near the Kabul airport, said Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., the commander of the US Central Command. In all, dozens of casualties, including Afghans, were reported. Follow our live coverage here.

Baby dies in interpreter's hands. An Afghan interpreter who was at the scene of the first explosion near the Kabul airport said a baby girl died as he tried to save her from the blast. "There was a lot of traffic. I had to get out and pick her up again," he told CBS News. "I took her to the hospital, but she died on my hands."

Evacuations will continue. The US will carry on evacuating Americans and allies despite the deadly bombings outside the Kabul airport, McKenzie said, adding: "To do anything less - especially now - would dishonor the purpose and sacrifice these men and women have rendered our country and the people of Afghanistan."

US Capitol officers sue Trump. Seven US Capitol Police officers are suing former President Donald Trump, as well as several far-right figures and extremist groups, for attacks against police at the January 6 insurrection. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of coordinating the attack on the Capitol ahead of time, resulting in mental and physical injuries for the officers, among other claims.

Sigh. TikTok has removed hashtags associated with the "milk crate challenge," a popular trend that experts warn can lead to severe injuries. The challenge involves building a makeshift pyramid-like staircase out of empty milk crates and trying to walk up and down the crates without falling.
