What's going on today:
- The big guy behind Evergrande. Meet Hui Ka Yan, the billionaire at the head of Evergrande, the massive Chinese property development company in danger of defaulting on $300 billion in loans. The property giant's founder grew up in a rural family and worked in the steel industry. Now, he's one of China's richest men.
- Absolute mayhem. A co-founder of media company Ozy impersonated a YouTube exec on an investor call with Goldman Sachs: report. Samir Rao allegedly pretended to be YouTube executive Alex Piper in an investor call for $40 million with Goldman Sachs, New York Times media columnist Ben Smith reported.
- Epidemic of exemptions. More than half of San Francisco's unvaccinated police officers are seeking a religious exemption to avoid the city's vaccine requirement. The San Francisco Department of Human Resources received a total of 296 religious exemptions, the vast majority, 193, from police staff.
- Devastating numbers. A Michigan doctor said 6 out of 8 patients who questioned his medical advice on COVID-19 have died. "The answer was to have been vaccinated - but they were not and now they're angry at the medical community for their failure," Dr. Matthew Trunsky said.
- Gotta eat 'em all. Pokémon Oreos emblazoned with the legendary Pokémon Mew are being listed on eBay for $100,000. The Oreo x Pokemon collection contains a random set of cookies, but Pokémon lovers are on the hunt for the rare mythical Pokémon - Mew.
