What's going on today:
- Two Indian states have declared black fungus an epidemic. The fungus, known as mucormycosis, affects the sinuses, brain, and lungs, and has a 50% mortality rate. This means India is now struggling with a second, concurrent epidemic - even as COVID deaths surge.
- Zhang Yiming, the cofounder of Bytedance, which owns TikTok, is stepping down as CEO because he's not an 'ideal manager'. Zhang said in a very relatable memo that he's "not very social" and would have a bigger impact in a role that didn't involve managing people. Don't worry about him too much, though - the mysterious founder is still worth about $44.5 billion.
- Long COVID sufferers are turning to online communities for support when their doctors and families don't believe them. Doctors say these groups are a valuable resource, but warn they could unintentionally spread misinformation.
- Mr. Vance goes to Washington. No love for J.D. Vance on Capitol Hill this week as the 'Hillbilly Elegy' author explores a Senate bid. Only ten GOP senators showed up to meet with Vance, who is exploring a run for the Ohio Senate seat that's up for grabs as Sen. Rob Portman retires.
- Michael Cohen said he believes Trump will 'flip on all of them,' including his children, during the criminal investigation into his company. Cohen, who was jailed for campaign finance crimes and lying to Congress, has been working with prosecutors since 2018, so he obviously knows a thing or two about flipping. Trump, he continued, "cares for only himself and he realizes that his goose is cooked."
That's all for now. See you tomorrow.
