What's going on today:
- Holding things up. Senate Republicans have put a 'hold' on Biden's pick to oversee the January 6 prosecutions. Matt Graves' nomination to oversee the Capitol riot cases is in limbo as unnamed Republicans stand in the way of his confirmation.
- China's land grab lag. Demand for land in China is slumping as the Evergrande crisis unfolds, and local governments have withdrawn more than 200 plots of land from auction in the past month. The withdrawal of the land from auctions comes as banks are tightening lending to property developers in the wake of Evergrande's debt crisis.
- Marcano lawyer speaks out. Miya Marcano's family attorney said police didn't treat her disappearance as a "high-priority case" like Gabby Petito's. Daryl Washington said Gabby Petito and Miya Marcano's cases gave "the world an opportunity to see some of the differences that you have" when it comes to police resources.
- A detente among Dems? Sens. Bernie Sanders and Joe Manchin posed for photos at the Capitol as negotiations continue on $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill. In a video of the encounter taken by NBC
News reporter Frank Thorp, it appears that Sen. Manchin says, "never give up, Bernie," as they leave. - Total ship. Satellite images show massive congestion at the Port of Long Beach this year compared to 2020 and 2019. The port is coming off a record-breaking month of traffic as the entire industry reckons with logjams spurred by rising demand for consumer goods.
- Float this! Incredible video shows how a Canadian couple lifted and floated an entire home across a half-mile waterway to move it to a more ideal address. The house was tugged across the waterway by three boats, on a frame with plastic barrels and styrofoam padding to keep it buoyant.
