Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed was injured in an explosion in Malé, Maldives police said on Thursday.
Police said Nasheed, who is now the Speaker of the People's Majlis, is receiving treatment at a hospital.
Ahmed Mahloof, Minister of Youth and Community Empowerment in Maldives, told The Indian Express that Nasheed was leaving his home and walking toward his car when the explosion went off.
"I am deeply worried. An act of terrorism… I am sure this government will take strict action against perpetrators," he said.
Other sources told The Indian Express that Nasheed sustained a deep cut to his arm and several superficial wounds.
State TV channel PSM said that a foreign tourist was also injured in the blast, Reuters reported.
"Police are currently active on the scene and we urge the public to refrain from going to that area for the time being," Maldives Police said on Twitter. "We will keep updating the public."
