Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed was injured in an explosion in Malé, Maldives police said on Thursday.

Police said Nasheed, who is now the Speaker of the People's Majlis, is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Ahmed Mahloof, Minister of Youth and Community Empowerment in Maldives, told The Indian Express that Nasheed was leaving his home and walking toward his car when the explosion went off.

"I am deeply worried. An act of terrorism… I am sure this government will take strict action against perpetrators," he said.

Other sources told The Indian Express that Nasheed sustained a deep cut to his arm and several superficial wounds.
