Rupert Murdoch's News Corp hit by cyberattack it says was from China

News Corp, the media conglomerate owned by Rupert Murdoch, was hit by a cyberattack it suspects came from China, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The hack accessed emails and documents belonging to the company's employees, including journalists, according to The Journal.

The hack affected several news outlets owned by News Corp, including Dow Jones, the New York Post, The Sun, and The Times of London, The Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Journal is owned by News Corp.

Mandiant Inc., a cybersecurity firm that News Corp hired to investigate the hack, said it believes the perpetrators were working for China.

"Mandiant assesses that those behind this activity have a China nexus, and we believe they are likely involved in espionage activities to collect intelligence to benefit China's interests," said David Wong, the company's vice president of incident response, per The Journal.

The attack was discovered on January 20, The Journal reported.

US officials have long warned of Chinese intelligence gathering in the US. Earlier this week FBI Director Christopher Wray said the bureau opened new cases on Chinese intelligence operations every 12 hours.
