Roommate fatally slashed landlord after fallout on overdue rent, warrant says

A 42-year-old man in Hartford, Connecticut, is accused of fatally slashing his landlord and roommate with a sword, CNN reported.

The Hartford police told Insider that the landlord Victor King, 64, visited the police department on Saturday to file a report documenting strange behavior by Jerry Thompson, which included not speaking with him for months and "brandishing" a sword. King said that Thompson was overdue on rent and that he planned to use the report for future reference should he move forward with an eviction, according to the Hartford police. The police said that they offered to visit King's residence but that he only requested that a report be filed.

On Sunday, King's neighbors reported concerns to the police that King had not left the house, according to the Hartford police. When they arrived at his residence, authorities found King's body. The police said a medical examination would be conducted to confirm his time of death.

The police found Thompson, who The Hartford Courant reported as having previous convictions of assault and robbery, while driving in the city on Sunday evening, after King's body was discovered. While in the custody, he did not speak, the police said.

CNN reported that Thompson was detained in lieu of a $2 million bond and that his case would be continued in court on August 18. Thompson did not wish to speak with a public defender, according to CNN.
