As desperate family members await news, a new light installation in Jerusalem's Pais Arena Square pays tribute to the 224 hostages taken by Hamas militants during the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel.
Hamas militants brutally killed at least 1,400 people and injured around 5,431 in the attacks, the United Nations reported, citing data from Israeli authorities. Israel declared war on Hamas, launching a counterattack in which at least 7,028 Palestinians have been killed and 18,482 more have been injured in airstrikes that have caused widespread devastation, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health.
Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said Thursday that the families of 224 hostages have been notified that their relatives are being held in Gaza, The Times of Israel reported.
That number does not include the four hostages who have been released. Hagari also said that number may change as the military continues to gather information.
With a beam of light representing each hostage, "Lights of Hope" spans 1,000 meters, or 3,280 feet, Jewish News Syndicate reported. Photos from the opening event on Thursday night show family members of those held captive taking in the powerful display.
