  • Santee High School was briefly placed on lockdown from 1:45 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. after the suspect reportedly fled.
  • A second shooting took place at a primary school 25 minutes after the first shooting, where an adult male was grazed by a bullet.

The Los Angeles School Police Department and the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a shooting near Santee High School in Los Angeles California on Thursday.

CBS Los Angeles reported that two students at the high school were fighting, and one student shot the other.

Sgt. Rudy Perez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles School Police, told the Los Angeles Times that the injured student was a 16-year-old male, who was shot in the left leg outside the football field of the Santee High School.

The injured student was brought to a hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound, per ABC 7 News.

According to a report from NBC Los Angeles, the school was placed on lockdown for an hour while the police searched for the suspected shooter, who is still at large. The police described the suspect as a Hispanic male with short hair, arm tattoos, wearing dark blue clothes.

Gil Gamez, the president of the Los Angeles School Police Association, told NBC LA that the shootings are thought to be gang-related.

"Fighting is somewhat normal, carrying a gun on campus probably all day long and shooting somebody is not," Gamez said to NBC LA.

In his interview with the Los Angeles Times, Perez said there were actually two shootings in the area. The first occurred at 1:45 p.m., where the 16-year-old was injured. The second, involving an adult male who was grazed in the back by a bullet, happened 25 minutes later in front of the Maple Primary Center, where kindergarten and first-grade students attend class.

Maple Primary Center is located approximately one mile away from the Santee High School. Perez told the Los Angeles Times that he did not have information on whether the two shooting incidents were linked.

Both the Santee High School and the Maple Primary Center came out of lockdown mode before 3:10 p.m., per NBC LA.
