Paul Ryan says 'anybody not named Trump' has the best chance of winning the White House in 2024
- Paul Ryan says the GOP shouldn't pick Trump because suburban voters don't like him.
- He` said "anybody not named Trump" would have a better shot at the White House in 2024.
Paul Ryan said on Tuesday that the GOP has a better shot at winning the White House if the party does not nominate former President Donald Trump in 2024.
Ryan was asked during an appearance on Fox Business if he thought Trump was electable in 2024. In response, Ryan said that if Republicans want to win the presidency again, they need to choose someone else.
"That new swing voter in American politics is the suburban voter, and it's really clear the suburban voter doesn't like Trump, but they like Republicans," Ryan said. "So I think anybody not named Trump, I think is so much more likely to win the White House for us."
Ryan added that the GOP will "want to win the White House so badly and beat the Democrats" that the party will eventually acknowledge that it is "much more likely to lose with Trump."
The former Speaker said he thought there was a slate of candidates other than Trump who could be the party's 2024 pick. He named Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, former UN ambassador and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as possible choices.
"I like all of them," Ryan said. "Any one of these candidates would make a fine president, and most importantly, will win the White House."
Representatives for DeSantis, Pence, Youngkin, Haley, and Pompeo did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
Ryan acknowledged on Tuesday that he has an acrimonious history with Trump. Ryan was Speaker from 2015 and 2019 and left office two years into Trump's term. Ryan has publicly rebuked Trump on many occasions, and the latter has responded in kind.
This month, Ryan warned the GOP against picking Trump again, saying the former president performs badly in polls. He suggested that the only reason Trump is relevant is that "everybody's afraid of him."
In June, Ryan also praised Rep. Tom Rice for being one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Capitol riot. Trump lashed out at Ryan for the comment, calling him a "pathetic loser" and a "weak RINO."
And in May 2021, Ryan exhorted Republicans to focus on "independence and mettle" and not "the populist appeal of one personality." Trump, in response, called Ryan a "curse" to the GOP.
Trump has not declared his candidacy, though his aide and advisor Kellyanne Conway hinted in September that he is eager to announce his 2024 run soon.
A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
