- Three people were killed and five others were critically injured in shootings at the Michigan State University.
- Two people were killed at the university's Berkey Hall, and a third at the MSU Union.
A man suspected of fatally shooting at least three people and critically injuring five others at the Michigan State University on Monday night has shot and killed himself, the university's police department confirmed.
Police officers said during a press conference at midnight on Tuesday that the suspect fatally shot himself off-campus. Police said during a subsequent briefing at 1.30 a.m., local time, that the suspect was a 43-year-old man with no affiliation to Michigan State University
The suspect was involved in two separate shooting incidents on-campus, Chris Rozman, the interim deputy police chief of Michigan State University's police department, said at the police's midnight briefing. The first shooting was at the university's Berkey Hall, a building that houses the school's College of Social Science. The second was at the MSU Union, a building less than half a mile from Berkey Hall.
Rozman added that of the three fatalities, two were killed at Berkey Hall, and a third at the MSU Union.
Five injured people are in critical condition, and are being treated at the Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, Rozman said during the police's 1.30 a.m. briefing.
The university's shelter-in-place order has been lifted, per a tweet from the MSU police.
The suspect was earlier described by law enforcement as a short, Black male with "red shoes, jean jacket, wearing a baseball cap that is navy with a lighter brim." His motive is still unclear.
"I know that is going to be a question that lingers on everybody's mind," Rozman said during the police's midnight press conference. "We will do our best to determine that but at this time we have no idea."
The police at their midnight press conference declined to provide further information on the victims out of respect to their families.
The police told reporters earlier on Thursday that the first shooting began at 8:18 p.m. at Berkey Hall. Immediately following the shooting at Berkey Hall, there was a report of a shooting at the MSU Union. The suspect escaped from the north side of the MSU Union on foot, police said.
Aedan Kelley, a junior at MSU, told the Associated Press that he heard sirens wailing and a helicopter overhead while he was at home, a half-mile east of the university's campus. He added to the AP that he had locked his doors and covered up his windows, "just in case."
"It's all very frightening," Kelley told the AP. "And then I have all these people texting me wondering if I'm OK, which is overwhelming."
All activities on the MSU campus, including athletics and classes, will be canceled for the next 48 hours, police say.
The MSU Police and Public Safety did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
