Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer call on Trump to demand protestors to leave the US Capitol 'immediately'

• Thousands of pro-Trump supporters gathered in DC on Wednesday to attend a "March for Trump" rally to support the president's baseless claims that he won the election.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer are both calling on President Donald Trump to order the rioters who broke into the US Capitol to leave.

"We are calling on President Trump to demand that all protestors leave the U.S. Capitol and Capitol Grounds immediately," Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement.

On Wednesday, thousands of pro-Trump demonstrators organized in DC to attend a "March for Trump rally" to support the president's claims that he won the election. The situation escalated when rioters broke into the US Capitol and clashed with police.

Lawmakers who were convening to certify the 2020 election results had to evacuate or shelter in place as chaos heightened on Capitol Hill.

Trump finally addressed the protesters in a one minute video echoing his same baseless claims that the election was "fraudulent" and telling them to "go home in peace."

"I know your pain, I know you're hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election and everyone knows it especially the other side," Trump said. "But you have to go home now. We have to have peace, we have to have law and order, we have to respect our great people in law in order. We don't want anybody hurt."

He continued: "This was a fraudulent election, but we can't play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home.. we love you, you're very special."
