A gunman opened fire at a Chesapeake, Virginia Walmart late Tuesday night, killing six people and injuring at least six others.
Officers believe the gunman, a team lead at the store, killed himself at the scene, Chesapeake Chief of Police Col. Mark G. Solesky said at a press conference the morning after the shooting. Solesky said the gunman used a pistol.
The shooter's home has been searched, Solesky said. He said police don't think the public is in any more danger.
"At least six additional victims were transported to local hospitals for further medical treatment," the City of Chesapeake posted on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
One of the injured victims is in critical condition.
Outlining a timeline of events, Solesky said that police received a call at 10:12 p.m. local time on Tuesday about a shooting at the Walmart Supercenter. About 50 people were in the store at the time of the shooting, according to a timeline shared by the city of Chesapeake.
The first officers were on the scene two minutes later, and they entered the store at 10:16 p.m., Solesky said. The scene was declared safe at 11:20 p.m.
A police spokesman at the scene Tuesday night told the media that the shooting occurred inside the store, but that at least one person was found dead outside.
"Three individuals, including the shooter, were located deceased in the break room of the store. One victim was located deceased toward the front of the store. Three other victims were transported to local hospitals for further treatment, but succumbed to their injuries," the City of Chesapeake said on Twitter Wednesday.
A man named Kevin livestreaming from what appeared to be the parking lot described the shooting. In the video, the speaker wears a Walmart uniform and claims that the shooter was "one of the managers."
Police confirmed that he was an employee at the store in a Wednesday afternoon tweet.
"Bro blew his brains out and everything," the man said, appearing to describe the gunman killing himself.
In further conversation on the video, he and others named people they said had been killed. Authorities had not released any names or details as of early Wednesday.
A Walmart spokesperson told Insider that the company was "shocked at this tragic event at our Chesapeake, Virginia store."
"We're praying for those impacted, the community and our associates," the spokesperson said.
President Joe Biden said in a statement Wednesday morning that he and first lady Jill Biden "grieve for those families, for the Chesapeake community, and for the Commonwealth of Virginia."
"Because of yet another horrific and senseless act of violence, there are now even more tables across the country that will have empty seats this Thanksgiving," Biden wrote in the statement. "We also mourn for all those across America who have lost loved ones to these tragic shootings that we must come together as a nation to stand against."
He continued: "This year, I signed the most significant gun reform in a generation, but that is not nearly enough. We must take greater action."
Chesapeake city officials asked people to not go near the Walmart while the investigation was underway.
The FBI's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives said on Twitter that its Washington division was working with the Chesapeake police department on the investigation. FBI agents were pictured at the scene.
The Chesapeake Police Department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
