More than 17 million viewers tuned into Oprah's interview with Meghan and Harry, making it one of the most-viewed non-sports event on broadcast TV this year
- More than 17 million people watched Harry and Meghan's no-holds-barred interview with Oprah Winfrey.
- The couple shed light on racism, mental health struggles, and being frozen out of the Royal family.
- According to Nielsen ratings, viewers between the ages of 18-49 and 25-54 made up most of the views.
Oprah Winfrey's highly-anticipated interview with Harry and Meghan drew in a high number of viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The tell-all special, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, netted an average of 17.14 million viewers during its two-hour run time, according to Nielsen's "fast numbers," The Hollywood Reporter said.
So far, the only two televised events to top that figure this year were the 2021 Super Bowl, which had 96.4 million viewers according to ESPN, and an episode of the TV show "The Equalizer," which had 20.4 million viewers and aired directly after the Super Bowl on CBS.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Winfrey's interview with Harry and Meghan was the most-watched TV event on Sunday, with almost twice as many viewers as Sunday's airing of "60 minutes." The interview was most popular with two groups of viewers, those between the ages of 18-49 and 25-54.
The initial ratings and early data do not include views via streaming, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the figures may continue to climb when more ratings are released Tuesday after the interview is broadcast in different markets.
During the interview, Meghan Markle, later joined by Harry, shed light on dealing with racism, mental health issues, and media harassment during their stint at Buckingham Palace.
Harry said he was "disappointed," in his father for not standing up for Meghan and the couple revealed that Royal family members had conversations and concerns about the color of their son Archie's king color prior to his birth.
At this point, with numbers subject to increase, the interview was not the highest-viewed on American broadcast networks. Anderson Cooper's "60 Minutes" interview with Stormy Daniels in 2018 netted 21.3 million viewers, according to Deadline.
