Rebag makes it easy to buy and sell authentic designer handbags.

  • Selling your used designer handbags is a great way to make extra money and clear space in your closet for something new. However, the appraisal process has not traditionally been user-friendly.
  • Issues like a wide range in pricing, having to submit photos and extensive information, and long wait periods to receive quotes often discourage sellers from consigning.
  • Luxury consignment site Rebag has introduced a tool called Clair - The Comprehensive Luxury Appraisal Index - that makes it easy to see the value of your bag in three quick steps, so you can decide if you want to consign, trade, or keep.

The fashion resale market is on the rise, which is great news for those who have a stock of unworn or gently used clothing, accessories, and shoes. But, the process can also be tedious. You may spend hours taking photos of an item and wrapping it up to be shipped to a consignor, only to find out that it's actually worthless. This is especially frustrating when it comes to luxury items that you've likely spent a lot of money on.

To save you time and make the appraisal process much simpler, luxury consignment company Rebag has introduced a proprietary new tool called Clair, which stands for The Comprehensive Luxury Appraisal Index for Resale, and it can give you the value of a designer handbag instantly.

Because Rebag is a luxury resale retailer, Clair is able to pull from a database of over 50 brands and 10,000 bags that it uses to generate a highly accurate offer almost instantly. You don't need to upload pictures, write a profile, or send the bag in. You can get a quote for how much your bag would be worth in just minutes, allowing you to make an informed decision about what you'd like to do with it. Here is a step-by-step guide to how Clair works:

1. Find your bag using the Clair portal

All you need is the designer, model, style, and size of your bag.

Many appraisal sites require photos, serial numbers, or a physical inspection of the bag, but all you need for your Clair quote is some basic information. Start by inputting the designer, model, material or style, and size of your bag. Note that if you're looking to have a Chanel or Hermes bag appraised, you will need to provide a serial number.

To test out the service, I used a Celine Nano Luggage Bag which retails for $2,700. While I don't actually own the bag (sigh), I was able to find the information online and through the Clair database.

2. Describe your bag's color and condition

A set of guidelines help you to determine your bag's condition.

After confirming the exact model, you'll be asked to pick the bag's color. Then, you're tasked with choosing the bag's condition. Choose from "Excellent," "Great," "Very Good,"or "Good" condition. This part may be a little bit harder, as you'll have to be attuned to the wear and tear of your bag. Even if you think it's in perfect condition, small signs of wear will bring down the value. To make it easier, Rebag has given very specific guidelines and examples of bags in each category to help you understand where your bag fits in.

For the purpose of my test, I chose the color black and deemed the Celine bag in "Very Good" condition.

It's important to note that if you categorize your bag as "Great" but Rebag sees it as "Good," you may not get the full amount quoted. If you're unsure about where your bag fits in, you won't be able to get the quote instantaneously. Instead, you'll upload pictures of any damaged areas to the site. Rebag will reach out within one to two business days regarding the condition of your bag.

3. Reveal your instant offer

Your offer tells you the value of your bag in cash or Rebag credit.

After choosing the bag, describing its color and condition, you'll be given a quote. This resale value may vary from consignor to consignor, but it's the amount you'll get if you choose to work with Rebag. If you have a Rebag account, your offers will be held for 14 days, so you can look back at them for reference or decide later during the timeframe that you want to trade through the site.

According to Clair, the $2,700 Celine bag would be worth $815 dollars in cash or $940 in Rebag credit.

Bottom Line

Clair isn't perfect. Not every bag is on the database, and if yours isn't, you'll have to start by adding photos, which makes the process a bit more tedious. The quote you get from Rebag may also not be the same price offered by a different consignor. But, Clair is a great place to start your research. With little effort, you can get an instant valuation that will help you determine your next move. And, you're by no means locked into selling through Rebag. Anyone can use the service, regardless of where you are planning on selling or trading. Maybe your appraisal makes you realize you don't want to sell at all, and that you'd actually like to hold onto the piece as an investment. Clair is a smart way to stay informed so that you can make the right decision.

Ultimately, the process took me less than five minutes and was completely free. It was extremely easy to use and there's no commitment, so if you're unhappy with your appraisal, you don't need to take any action. If you have a luxury bag that you are even considering selling or trading in, you'd be remiss not to use this free service and access Clair's wealth of knowledge.
