LAPD releases bodycam footage of officer firing 3 shots and killing suspect and teen bystander inside Burlington department store
  • The LAPD released bodycam footage of a shooting in a Burlington store in North Hollywood on Thursday.
  • The police said an officer fired a bullet that killed a girl in a dressing room.

The Los Angeles Police Department on Monday released footage of an officer firing three shots without warning inside a Burlington department store in North Hollywood last Thursday.

The officer is on leave after killing Daniel Elena-Lopez, 24, and Valentina Orellana-Peralta, 14.

The 35-minute video containing graphic bodycam footage begins with an audio compilation of 911 calls.

In the first call, a person who identifies themselves as a Burlington employee says a "hostile customer" is "going crazy."

The person tells the 911 dispatcher that the customer is "breaking things" and attacking people in the store with a bike lock.

A second 911 caller says the man has a gun and has fired multiple shots. A third caller says the man does not have a gun but is threatening people in the store.

The video then cuts to CCTV footage from inside the store and to police body-camera footage.

In the footage, officers can be seen entering the store with guns drawn. As they search the store, an officer shouts "Victim down!" after finding a bloodied woman near Elena-Lopez. "She's bleeding!" another officer shouts.

Seconds later, an officer fires three times at Elena-Lopez.

Authorities said they believe a stray bullet hit Orellana-Peralta.

The police said they discovered Orellana-Peralta and her mother in a dressing room behind where the officer shot Elena-Lopez.

"Preliminarily, it is believed the victim was struck by a round which skipped off the floor and entered the dressing room wall," the video says.

The LAPD did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Capt. Stacy Spell has said the investigation could take up to a year.

"This chaotic incident resulting in the death of an innocent child is tragic and devastating for everyone involved," Police Chief Michel Moore said in a statement after the shooting. "I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl's life, and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family."

LAPD officers have fatally shot at least 18 people this year, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Orellana-Peralta's family has called the shooting "yet another case of a senseless use of a deadly weapon by police force in the USA."
