LAPD Chief Michel Moore's security detail is under investigation for wrongfully detaining a man during a trip to France
- Los Angeles Police Department officers were in France last month to discuss Olympic security.
- While there, a security detail for LAPD Chief Michel Moore wrongfully detained a man in Marseille.
During a trip last month to France, two members of Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore's security detail detained a man on the streets of Marseille who they wrongfully accused of stealing the cellphone of a high-ranking LAPD commander's wife, the Los Angeles Times reported.
From November 13-20, the group was in France to discuss security preparations for the Summer Olympics, which will be hosted by French cities in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028, according to the Times.
The incident, which prompted an internal investigation by the department's Professional Standards Bureau, occurred when Moore, LAPD Assistant Chief Robert Marino, their wives, a security detail, and a French National Police attaché were leaving a restaurant in Marseille, according to the Times.
A man on the street bumped into Marino's wife, who believed her phone had been stolen, and was consequently detained by the security detail, officials told the Times. Once it was determined the man had not stolen any property, the French police attaché took complaints from the man and others he was with about their treatment, the Times reported.
Because members of the detail attempted to detain an individual outside of their jurisdiction, the US Consulate and local police were notified of the incident, LAPD told the Times.
Insider has reached out to the French National Police for comment. LAPD declined to comment on the incident.
