After almost five weeks of declining COVID cases, the global tally has once again started spiking, mainly in three regions — Asia, Africa, and Europe — said the World Health Organization (WHO) in its latest weekly update.
Tedros Adhanom, WHO’s director-general, said in a media briefing, “Despite reduced testing the global cases are spiking again and this means that the cases we are seeing are just the tip of the iceberg."
He further added, "Continued local outbreaks and surges are to be expected, particularly in areas where measures to prevent transmission have been lifted."

reports, the global COVID-19 cases rose by 8% last week as compared to the week before that. However, the number of deaths continued to decline by 17% last week as compared to a week before.

South Korea

South Korea, on Thursday, reported over 6,00,000 new COVID-19 cases, which is the highest daily spike the country has so far witnessed. The latest tally marks at least a 55 percent surge than the previous day.
With new COVID cases, South Korea’s overall caseload now stands at 82,50,592. According to several media reports, the country had its deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday, March 15, with 293 deaths reported in 24 hours.
China

The country from where this pandemic started reportedly, is now again facing a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases which has led to millions of people going under a lockdown again.
China reported 3,507 fresh COVID-19 cases yesterday, on Wednesday, with 11 as severe cases.
As per media reports, the reason behind this sudden surge in China is due to the Stealth variant of COVID-19.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa surpassed 11.28 million, as of Wednesday evening. South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya are among the countries with the most cases on the continent, said the Africa Centres for Disease Control.
