Ginni Thomas pestered Trump to hire her allies and blamed the 'deep state' when they weren't, CNN report says

Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, lobbied former president Donald Trump in a bid to get her allies hired in the White House, a new report says.

Based on an interview with 14 sources close to Thomas, CNN in a report Sunday provided more details of her bid to secure influence in the Trump White House.

Her political activity has come under renewed scrutiny in recent weeks, with text messages obtained by the Jan 6 commission showing she contacted Mark Meadows, Trump's former chief of staff, to push conspiracy theories about Trump's defeat in the 2020 election.

The texts have led to calls for Thomas, a conservative justice, go recuse himself from cases relating to the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol — an attack that was fueled by election-fraud disinformation.

The CNN report said that Thomas attended a private lunch in the White House after the 2018 midterms and directly lobbied Trump to have allies installed in desirable jobs in the administration.

Trump, the report said, advised her to contact his staff to discuss the issue further.

Sources told CNN that the Presidential Personnel Office was skeptical and slow-walked her requests, partly through concern that her recommendations would imperil Trump's criminal-justic bill.

Some suggestions, they said, failed background checks or otherwise raised red flags due to their controversial views.

The bill, which was making its way through Congress at the time, was adamantly opposed by some conservatives, including Thomas.

At the 2018 meeting, CNN said Thomas accused the "deep state" of seeking to foil her recommendations.

Details of Trump's meetings with Thomas were previously discussed by Stephanie Grisham, Trump's former press secretary, who said Trump enjoyed the meetings because he "loved to gossip" with her.

In a Washington Free Beacon interview in March, Thomas said that she and her husband didn't discuss their work with one another.
