The Floyd family attorney said "painfully earned justice has finally arrived" after ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday.
Chauvin has been found guilty on all three counts - second degree murder, third degree murder, and manslaughter - in the death of George Floyd.
Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes, and his death sparked national and global protests on racial injustice.
"GUILTY! Painfully earned justice has finally arrived for George Floyd's family," Floyd family attorney Ben Crump tweeted following the verdict. "This verdict is a turning point in history and sends a clear message on the need for accountability of law enforcement. Justice for Black America is justice for all of America!"
Chauvin's trial began at the end of March, and the prosecution and defense delivered closing arguments on Monday. Jurors began deliberation at about 5 p.m., which lasted just under 10 hours and 30 minutes before the court announced they had reached a verdict.
The three other officers who were at the scene of Floyd's arrest - Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng - have also been charged and will face a separate trial.
