Extreme makeover, US Navy edition: See the new apartment-like digs on US aircraft carriers

<p class="ingestion featured-caption">Seating, bookcases, and art turned carrier USS Abraham Lincoln's library into an inviting lounge.Gidget Fuentes</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The US Navy's fleet wasn't furnished with style in mind.</li><li>New lounges and gaming rooms are replacing old spaces on US aircraft carriers.</li></ul><p>The US Navy's nuclear-powered <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-fourth-aircraft-carrier-warships-react-middle-east-fighting-2024-8">aircraft carriers</a> are the <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-of-us-navy-aircraft-carriers-supercarriers-to-ford-class-2020-10">gem of the fleet</a>, and their presence in any conflict region draws global attention.</p><p>Life on the 1,092-foot-long warship for the 5,500 sailors and Marines housed aboard, though, is anything but a luxury cruise.</p><p>Sailors live in the <a target="_blank" class href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flight-operations-uss-eisenhower-red-sea-houthis-us-navy-2024-2">daily grind</a> of 24/7 operations, noisy flight lines, and crowded industrial spaces that lack creature comforts. The norms of their work and sleeping spaces are fluorescent lights, white walls, exposed cables, and utility pipes. Metal desks and chairs in crew hangouts don't feel comfortable or inviting.</p><p>But that may be changing. Some of the spaces on these floating cities are getting decked out with comfortable couches and throw pillows, WiFi, TVs, and gaming consoles. Fake plants soften corners and shelves. Only the exposed insulation and stenciled signs give away that these spaces are within the carrier's armored hull.</p>
