Video footage captured the emotional moment a Ukrainian soldier reunited with his mother in a town that's been newly reclaimed from Russian occupation in a stunning counteroffensive amid Moscow's war with the eastern European country.

The video, published by Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne, shows Derhachi District Mayor Vyacheslav Zadorenko embracing his mother after he pulled up in a car in a moving scene in a liberated village of Ukraine's Kharkiv region.

Zadorenko's tearful mom is seen in the video overwhelmed with joy as she repeatedly hugs her son and other members of Ukraine's armed forces upon their arrival.

"The day I waited for the most in my life - meeting my dear mother!" Zadorenko said in a caption to the clip that was posted to his Facebook page on Tuesday.

The tear-jerker video also shows Zadorenko and other Ukrainian soldiers greeting and hugging other residents in the town.

In recent days, Ukrainian forces have recaptured large swaths of territory from Russian control in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine's second-largest city.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukrainian forces have reclaimed more than 2,300 square miles of territory from Russian occupation since the beginning of this month.

"Thank you to everyone who is really ready to fight against Russian terror!" Zelenskyy said. "We bring victory closer every day."

Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February and since the war began thousands have been killed on both sides.
