Delta flight attendants bought supplies for Afghan children on an evacuation flight out of Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Delta Pilot Alexander Kahn said on CNN's "New Day" on Friday.

They bought diapers, wipes, candy, balloons, coloring books, and other things the evacuees might need. Kahn said they did it "on their own initiative" and spent "their own money."

The flight attendants wouldn't let the pilots pay them back for the supplies, Kahn told CNN.

"We knew these evacuees were coming with no opportunity to prepare and to take things that you and I would prepare for an international flight," Kahn added.

By Friday, more than 100,000 people had been evacuated from Kabul since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, but thousands more Afghans who helped the US military or are vulnerable to the militant group's strict rule are in danger of being left behind if they can't catch a flight out before the August 31 deadline.

Explosions outside the Kabul airport on Thursday killed at least 13 US service members and nearly 100 Afghans, hastening the need to get people out as quickly as possible.
