CNN executives Jeff Zucker and Allison Gollust may have advised then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on how to respond to former President Donald Trump's attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, Rolling Stone reported on Thursday.

Zucker, who led the cable news giant since 2013, resigned Wednesday after failing to disclose a "consensual relationship" with Gollust, the company's executive vice president and chief marketing office.

Questions about Zucker's relationship with Gollust came to light during the investigation into CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, who was fired in December after it was found he used his media sources to help his brother fight off sexual harassment allegations, Insider previously reported.

The unnamed inside source told Rolling Stone that it was uncovered in the investigation that Zucker was also advising the former Democratic governor on how to respond to Trump's attacks "in ways not dissimilar to what led to Chris Cuomo's dismissal."

"The couple provided the governor with talking points on how to respond to the president's criticisms of the New York crisis," Rolling Stone reported.

The source also claims the pair often booked the former governor on their network for exclusive appearances which, in turn, helped to boost ratings.

Other CNN insiders suspect that Chris Cuomo led investigators to details of Zucker's undisclosed relationship with Gollust as revenge for his firing, Insider previously reported.

A representative for CNN did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
